If you have ever made an AI character you loved but could not get them to look the same in your next image, I get it. That used to drive me crazy too. But with the newest update to Ideogram 3.0, you can finally keep your characters looking exactly the way you want while still exploring new scenes, outfits, and environments.
In this post, I am going to walk you through the same workflow I use in my full YouTube tutorial so you can lock in your characters and tell better visual stories.
Step 1: Start with the Character Reference Tool
The 1 Image Character Reference feature is the magic ingredient for consistency. You start with one image of your character and Ideogram treats it like the master version. Every time you generate a new image, it uses that reference to make sure your character’s face, hairstyle, and overall vibe stay exactly the same.
This is a huge deal for anyone creating branded visuals or telling stories through AI art because it eliminates the “face drift” that happens when your character slowly changes with each new image.
Step 2: Change the Scene Without Changing the Character
Once your character is locked in, you can start placing them in completely different settings. A quiet coffee shop. A neon cyberpunk street. A medieval castle. The possibilities are endless and the face stays the same every single time.
All you have to do is focus your prompt on describing the new scene and let the reference tool handle keeping the character’s look intact.
Step 3: Work Smarter Inside the Canvas
The Canvas tool in Ideogram 3.0 is where you can take your images even further. Think of it as a built-in creative studio where you can:
- Add or remove objects using Magic Fill
- Work in layers for complex compositions
- Expand your image to fit any aspect ratio with Extend
- Get richer results from short prompts with Magic Prompt
I love using Canvas for storyboarding, marketing visuals, and creative projects that need multiple connected scenes. It keeps everything in one place so I never have to break my creative flow.
Step 4: Expand, Replace, and Refine
Need to turn a square portrait into a wide cinematic frame? Extend makes that simple. Want to remove an object or add something new? Magic Fill has you covered. And if you start with a short prompt but want more detail, Magic Prompt will instantly level it up.
These tools give you the flexibility to tell bigger, more complete stories with your characters while keeping them consistent from start to finish.
Why Consistent AI Characters Matter
If you are a creator, brand, or storyteller, keeping your characters consistent builds recognition and trust with your audience. Instead of starting from scratch for every image, you can build a whole world around a single character.
With Ideogram 3.0, that process is faster, more creative, and a lot more fun.
